The luminous intensity and the luminance of the signal

There are several standards that determine the requirements for the traffic light’s luminous intensity. Generally, the light intensity should be high enough so that the signal is clearly visible during the day, but not dazzling at night. The optical system of the traffic light determines the intensity of the light signal and depends on the elements that regulate the light (diffusion lenses, reflector, light source). Because the intensity of sunlight increases as we approach the earth’s equator, the light intensity requirements of traffic lights vary depending on where they are installed. The light sources used by VIEREX are selected in order to achieve the appropriate light intensity in the traffic lights depending on the ambient brightness that exists in the place of their installation.

The contrast of the luminous field to the surroundings

The surrounding luminance during the day and the light pollution of the cities at night degrade the distinctness of a light signal.

The dark color of the field port (the square front surface) and the visor, increase the contrast of the luminous field to the surround. The addition of the contrast frame, around the traffic light, intensifies the contrast more, in order for the luminous field to be even more distinct.

The reflection of the sun’s rays on the traffic light can cause phantom effect (false recognition of the traffic light signal). VRX traffic lights have a properly shaped housing and anti-phantom optical systems.




The size of the light signal’s surface

The recognition of the light signal is easier, such the larger the diameter of the light fields. On boulevards where the speed of vehicles is high, the diameter of the light fields should be larger, so that the signals can be seen from a greater distance, so that there is sufficient reaction time for drivers.

VRX traffic lights are manufactured in three sizes, corresponding to three different light field diameters (100 mm, 200 mm and 300 mm).



Dust and water tightness of the traffic light

The suspended dust present in the environment increases or decreases depending on the relative humidity of the air. The amount of dust in the air is small in countries with little sunshine and a lot of rainfall, while on the contrary it is large in countries with a lot of sunshine and little rainfall.

The traffic lights flash repeatedly and the temperature inside changes constantly. The result of this is the creation of air currents, which exert pressure and negative pressure, from the interior of the signal to the environment and vice versa.

If the traffic light is not sufficiently sealed, then the incoming air carries dust and moisture. Dust and moisture accumulate on the surfaces of the parts of the traffic light’s optical system (lenses, light sources, reflectors) resulting in a reduction in the light intensity and brightness of the signals, while the conductivity of moisture can cause electrical damage to the operation of the signal traffic light and in the installation.

Therefore, the impermeability of the signaling devices is an essential element for maintaining their quality over time and for the reliable operation of the installation.
